I recently posted a question on facebook, asking a group of moms if they would inform their nanny of a nanny cam or not.... the response:
62% of the moms who answered said they would definitely inform their employee of a nanny cam as this is seen as an invasion of privacy to most.
My daughter has a great nanny - they are soooo good together, but sometimes I just wonder what it would be like to be a fly on the wall to see what happens when I am not there... I mean Harper is the most precious gift, not that I have any doubts about our nanny - nobody is perfect and for the most part we have enjoyed having a nanny for Harper as she is super healthy and gets all the attention her heart desires... there will be a time for creche but that time is not now. Maybe from the age of 3?
Anyway I looked into installing a nanny cam and came across some useful info that other moms may need at some point.
Where to find nanny cams:
Prices vary...I havent seen anything less than R1000...yikes!
Legalities:
Basically RICA requires that you obtain the written consent of the person in your employment that might be captured and/or recorded on a Nanny Cam Monitor before you install it. The issue of consent has been debated in courts to establish the admissibility of recordings being introduced as evidence which display misconduct by employees.
To be safe, it is therefore advisable that you obtain your domestic worker’s or nanny’s prior written consent before you install a Nanny Cam Monitor. The most effective way of obtaining such consent is to make provision therefore in a written employment contract.
Extra Info:
It’s illegal to record in a room where a person may hold the expectancy of privacy e.g. bathrooms or an employee bedroom.
Only cover the most important areas of the house.
Specify the areas where the Nanny Cam Monitors will be installed.
If footage is to be used in either civil or criminal proceedings the footage must be clear with the audio sharp where available.
The footage must be authenticated, and not be tampered with in any way.
